Mariya Gabriel has been the Vice President of the European People’s Party Group (EPP), head of EPP delegation in the European Parliament, member of committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and a coordinator of the EPP Group in the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee (FEMM).
Mariya Gabriel passed the MEP hearing on Tuesday 20 June 2017. During the three hours of the hearing with her colleagues, Gabriel was answering questions about cyber security, personal data protection and telecommunications which will be the focus of her work as the EU executive for Digital Economy and Society portfolio.
She will oversee the structuring of technology bills by means of talks with the Parliament and state governments. In the two-year term, which ends in 2019, she mentioned that her priority would be the implementation of the digital agenda including the review of the ePrivacy Directive. She however stated that two years is not enough to complete all the tasks but will prioritize working on the Commissions Digital Single Market.
Ms. Gabriel will be working under Vice President Andrus Ansip, responsible for the digital single market, and in coordination also with Jyrki Katainen, Commissioner for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness.
